Endurance: Colony
The second scene of Endurance depicts a seemingly idyllic colony of penguins nestled within the frozen landscape. Their behaviour responds to the changing environment within the artwork as well as to the movements of the unsuspecting viewer. The colony is overshadowed by the continuous and, at times, menacing advancement of a large ice shelf. At the viewer’s touch, the ice crumbles into the surrounding sea, dramatised in slow motion to capture our human impact on the planet most viscerally.
