Seasons

A canvas of hand-painted interactive butterflies shifting through the vivid hues of spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

Seasons is a mesmerising digital artwork that explores the interplay between nature, time, and human interaction. Expanding upon Harris’s signature approach to digital hand-painting, this interactive artwork invites viewers into a dynamic display of butterflies as they transition through the changing seasons.

“The transitions in Seasons aren’t just visual; they are emotional. Each shift in hue and atmosphere is designed to evoke a sense of time passing—an ever-evolving spectacle that mirrors both nature’s rhythm and our own experiences of it.”
- Dominic Harris

Each butterfly is meticulously crafted, layered with digital brushstrokes that create a sense of depth, iridescence, and movement. The composition evolves in real-time, shifting in color and atmosphere as the seasons progress—spring and summer burst with vibrant hues, while autumn’s warmth gives way to winter’s cool elegance. The passage of time is both a visual and emotional experience, heightened by the artwork’s interactive nature.

Seasons is an exploration of the emotional and scientific impact of color. Harris captures the transient magic of seasonal change, evoking the sensations, moods, and memories that colors inspire. This perpetual cycle of renewal offers a contemplative space where viewers are no longer passive observers but active participants in the transformation of the natural world.

Context

Seasons is the continuation of Harris’s exploration of the synergetic relationship between technology, nature, and human interaction. Like many of Harris’ artworks in which hand-painted digital butterflies shift between order and chaos in response to touch, Seasons invites the viewer to engage with a constantly evolving spectacle of nature, and evokes the steady progression of time across a seasonal year. The piece resonates harmoniously with NeoBloom, where imagined flowers exist in a perpetual state of bloom, yet here, Harris embraces transformation on a grander scale—capturing the ephemeral beauty of seasonal change rather than preserving a singular moment.

In the broader context of Seasons, Dominic Harris’s Metamorphosis series explores the cyclical and fundamental forces that shape the natural world. Seasons symbolize the perpetual transformation of life—growth, decay, renewal—mirroring Harris’s fascination with transition and evolution. This idea finds resonance in Metamorphosis: Elements, where each elemental force (earth, water, fire, air, and metal) represents an essential component of existence, emphasizing nature’s raw, untamed power.

In contrast, Metamorphosis: Primary distills these themes further, engaging with the most fundamental aspects of color—red, yellow, and blue—evoking the building blocks of perception, creativity, and structure. The relationship between these concepts reflects Harris’s artistic exploration of order and chaos, structure and spontaneity, and the interplay between human interaction and natural phenomena. Just as seasons change, colors mix, and elements shift, his digital artworks remain in a constant state of transformation, inviting viewers to engage with the dynamic essence of life itself.
